AMD introduce nuove versioni di cpu Opteron

AMD ha ufficialmente introdotto, nella giornata di oggi, nuove versioni di processore Opteron, soluzione specifica per Workstation e server dotata di supporto all'architettura x86-64. Le due nuove categorie di processori introdotti sono quelli classe 100, per sistemi a 1 cpu, e 800, da utlizzare in configurzioni con 4 oppure 8 processori.

I processori della famiglia 100, in particolare, verranno adottati in abbinamento al chipset nVidia nForce 3 in workstation Open GL.
Stando a quanto dichiarato da AMD la scheda madre Asus basata su questo chipset, al momento piattaforma di riferimento per i processori Opteron della famiglia 100, verrà commercializzata in volumi a partire dal prossimo mese.

I prezzi ufficiali dei nuovi processori sono riportati di seguito:

- Opteron 140: 229 dollari
- Opteron 142: 438 dollari
- Opteron 144: 669 dollari
- Opteron 840: 749 dollari
- Opteron 842: 1.299 dollari
- Opteron 844: 2.149 dollari

AMD Expands Options for 4-Way And 8-Way Enterprise Computing with the AMD Opteron™ Processor 800 Series

—AMD also announces AMD Opteron processor 100 Series, offering businesses additional choice of AMD64 technology—

SUNNYVALE, CA -- June 30, 2003 --AMD [NYSE: AMD] today announced an expansion of its family of AMD Opteron™ processors with the new AMD Opteron processor 800 Series, for 4-way and 8-way servers and the 100 Series, for 1-way servers and workstations.

The new AMD Opteron processors join the AMD Opteron processor 200 Series launched in April 2003. AMD Opteron processors are designed to enable an easy migration to 64-bit computing for enterprise and small and medium businesses as their needs require, while maintaining backward compatibility with 32-bit applications. Based on the industry-standard x86 instruction set, AMD Opteron processors offer increased flexibility and scalability for enterprise computing.

The 800 Series is scalable for up to 8-way servers and can meet customers’ long-range computing needs for enterprise infrastructure and applications by offering a simplified, non-proprietary server platform. 4P servers based on the 800 Series offer the world’s highest performance according to previously released benchmarks from the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC).

The AMD Opteron processor 100 Series is targeted at 1P server applications, such as those used by Internet and application service providers, and intensive workstation applications such as engineering and digital content creation software. Based on AMD64 architecture, both the AMD Opteron processor 100 Series and 800 Series offer increased bandwidth and reduced memory latency through leading-edge HyperTransport™ technology and an integrated DDR memory controller.

Availability
AMD Opteron processor Models 840, 842 and 844 and AMD Opteron processor Models 140, 142, and 144 are immediately available worldwide. Systems based on the AMD Opteron processor Models 840, 842 and 844 are available in North America through the recently announced Validated Server Program. A number of system builders, including APPRO, Aspen Systems, Inc., and RackSaver, Inc., are among the first to offer servers through this program.

Motherboards based on the AMD Opteron processor Models 140, 142, and 144 are expected to be available worldwide in July 2003 from ASUS with chipset support from NVIDIA. Systems based on the AMD Opteron processor 100 Series are expected to be available from such vendors as Angstrom MicroSystems and Boxx Technologies in the third quarter of 2003.

Pricing
In 1,000-unit quantities, the AMD Opteron processor Model 840 is $749, the AMD Opteron processor Model 842 is $1299 and the AMD Opteron processor Model 844 is $2149. Also in 1,000-unit quantities, the AMD Opteron processor Model 140 is $229, the AMD Opteron processor Model 142 is $438 and the AMD Opteron processor Model 144 is $669.
